Avatar Review

Being probably one of the most critically acclaimed movies of last year I went in to see avatar with high expectation like I assumed many other people did as well. And unlike many films in 2009, Avatar actually delivered.
Directed by James Cameron, who directed blockbuster hits such as Titanic, Terminator and Aliens, and staring Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldana, Avatar makes it as last year’s number one bestseller after only being out for a couple of weeks. Being Cameron’s next film following Titanic he had to make it a big on, and had been in production for this film since 1994, and was originally planned for a 1999 release, but because of the lack of technology needed Cameron pushed it back until his vision was fully realized. And this apparently was a smart choice for Cameron considering within only the first few weeks Avatar had begun breaking a series of world records.
Avatar is about ex Marine Jake Sully (Sam Worthington) who takes his brother’s place on an exploration to a planet called Pandora. In order to further explore the planet and interact with its species (namely the tall blue human like creatures called the Na’vi) Jake must use an Avatar. An Avatar is basically a body of a Na’vi that Jake controls with his mind. Lead by Dr. Grace Augustine (Sigourney Weaver) the leader of the avatar program Jake becomes one of the Na’vi and gets particularly close with a female Na’vi called Neytiri (Zoe Saldana). Soon Jake considers himself one of the Na’vi and forgets about his mission, which doesn’t go over well with Colonel Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang).
Avatar takes film special effect to a new level by basically creating an entire new world that seems so real that it feels like you’re there as well. This world has color changing flowers, giant dragons, floating mountains and much more. No film can compare to this in special effects. On the other hand, the story line was dry and could have been much better. It’s not really a best picture winner but you can go ahead and assume that this film will win for best special effects and perhaps some other smaller awards such as best cinematography. I give Avatar an 8.9.
