Last Sundays was the 60th Emmy awards ceremony. This awards ceremony was hosted by Tom Bergeron, Heidi Klum, Howie Mandel, Jeff Probst, and Ryan Seacrest. These are not only all game show hosts, but were all the first nominees for the newest awards best reality show host, in which Jeff Probst (Survivor) won. The generally most enjoyable part of the night, the beginning, was fairly dull. I enjoyed the first minute when today's greatest stars stated some of TV's best catchphrases, which ended with the cast of Everybody Loves Raymond saying Peter Boils catchphrase "Holy Crap" and the last quote was a video of Peter Boil saying Holy Crap himself. But the rest of the opening was extremely boring. It was the five hosts on stage completely unscripted, which would have been fine if any of them were really funny.
The actual ceremony was like any other despite a few funny moments. My favorite moment of the evening was when the original Michael Scott, Ricky Gervais reminds the viewers of his win last year and he didn't get it, but the current Michael Scott Steve Carell accepted it for him. So there was about three minutes of Ricky Gervais hastling Carell for the Emmy. "Have you even been to see ghost town yet?" Asked Gervais. "No? I sat through Even Almighty, give me my Emmy." Eventually Carell reviled it was hidden under his chair. It was without a doubt the most I laughed that evening.
I was happy to see 30 rock going away with awards for best actor (Alec Baldwin) best actress (Tina Fey) and best comedy series. As well as other awards for best guest actor and best writing in a comedy series.
One of the things I look for in the Emmys in comedy, an this ceremony didn't deliver. Hopefully next year it will be better.
